People’s Square

Praça do Povo, where you're standing now, marks the gateway to the city for anyone arriving by sea. Just steps from the marina and connecting directly to Avenida do Mar—the road that runs along the coastline—this open square is a scenic and welcoming space, flanked by lush green walkways on either side. It was created in 2014 and has since become a venue for all kinds of events, from concerts and fairs to open-air shows. Even if there’s nothing scheduled during your visit, it still offers a stunning panoramic view over Funchal Bay, the ocean, and the boats quietly moored in the harbor. It’s a perfect starting point for a peaceful stroll along the water. Avenida do Mar itself predates the square by several decades, having been built in the 1940s as part of major efforts to redevelop the seafront. That’s when it really became a vibrant part of city life, loved by both locals and visitors alike.
