History

Located at the edge of the canal dos Botirões, the esplanade was, from the beginning of the twentieth century, the main place of landing of fish and salt in Aveiro. Once unloaded, the goods were sold to the inhabitants on the stalls of the famous fish market, sheltered under a great square iron structure of Eiffel inspiration, inaugurated in 1904. But since 2022, the market has been transferred to the Mercado Manuel Firmino, not far from the Forum of Aveiro. To bring this precious architectural heritage to life, the municipality has installed on the spot restaurants and bars, and holds there a varied events calendar. Thus, the Praça do Peixe is today a three-in-one: a historic place, a gastronomic showcase and a dynamic cultural space, particularly lively in the evening.
