Queen Maria II National Theatre

Look to your left and take in the magnificent architecture of this theater, considered one of the most important in the country. This was once the site of the Estaus Palace, the residence of foreign dignitaries visiting Lisbon, and later the seat of the Portuguese Inquisition. It was destroyed by fire in 1836, paving the way for the construction of the building before you, the Queen Maria II National Theatre. It is named after the Portuguese Queen Maria II, who reigned between 1826 and 1853, and was an avid theatergoer. This beautiful neo-classical structure with its 6 Ionic columns was built to plans by Italian architect Fortunato Lodi and has stood in Rossio Square since 1846.
