A façade of azulejos

Built between 1709 and 1739, the Church of Saint Ildefonso is a pleasant milestone on the route of Porto. It honours the art of the azulejo thanks to a work created by Jorge Colaço, the artist to whom one also owes the sublime interior decor of São Bento station. This vast puzzle of decorated faience tiles illustrates scenes of the life of Saint Ildefonso, honoured in this place, as well as allegories of the Christian sacrament of the Eucharist. The façade, covered with these characteristic blue azulejos, testifies to Portuguese identity and to the place of this art in the religious heritage of the country.
