The Former Harbourmaster's Office of Aveiro

To your left, to your right, and even along the Ria, you’ll notice that monuments are everywhere in Aveiro. As for this long, low-lying building, nestled almost at water level, its place here feels entirely natural. Beneath your feet flows a canal that’s been part of this site since the Middle Ages. Back then, this spot was home to a ground-level tidal mill. The mill itself is long gone, but if you look closely along the water’s edge, you can still see the stone arches that once supported it. Around 1830, the structure became part of the porcelain factory of José Ferreira Pinto Basto, founder of the renowned “Vista Alegre” brand, a global benchmark in the world of fine porcelain. 73 years later, the building’s appearance was renovated with neoclassical and Art Nouveau touches. The elegant new look marked a new era, as the building was transformed into the Aveiro School of Industrial Design. But that wasn’t its final chapter. In the 20th century, it entered its most iconic phase, becoming the headquarters of Aveiro’s Harbourmaster’s Office. That role continued until 1992, when a new commercial port was built in Gafanha de Nazaré, just six kilometres away. With no further use, the old Harbourmaster’s Office began to deteriorate, especially after a more modern building was added to the rear, disrupting the harmony. Luckily, a major renovation project, involving several architectural teams, helped restore much of its original character. Today, the building houses the Municipal Assembly, and one of its galleries is dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
