Let’s take a short break in our walk to highlight a few places that didn’t make it into the main route but are well worth discovering. Ljubljana may be a small-scale capital, yet the moment you step beyond the historic center, it keeps surprising you. If you’re in the mood for nature, start with Tivoli Park, the city’s great green lung.
Locals love it for jogging, strolling, or simply unwinding, and they’ll tell you a visit to Ljubljana isn’t complete without a stop in Tivoli. For something completely different, head to Metelkova, a former military site turned hotspot of alternative culture. Covered in graffiti, filled with quirky installations and buzzing bars, it’s a place like no other, both day and night.
If you’d prefer something more relaxed, walk down to Špica, just south of the center, an oasis on the banks of the Ljubljanica. With its sunny terraces and grassy riverbanks, it’s the perfect spot for a coffee break in the open air. And if you’ve got a little extra time, Ljubljana is also the ideal base for exploring Slovenia.
Just a few kilometers away lie the Ljubljana Marshes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can see remains of prehistoric pile-dwelling villages. A bit further, you can venture into the spectacular Postojna Cave and marvel at Predjama Castle clinging to its cliffside, or spend a day at Lake Bled—the country’s most famous postcard view, with its tiny island and church floating on turquoise waters. Ljubljana will charm you with its picturesque center, but its true wealth lies all around it: nature, art, history, and a few delightfully offbeat places that complete the picture of Slovenia’s capital.
