The Butchers' Bridge, the lovers' bridge

The Ljubljana audio-guided tour points out to you, spanning the Ljubljanica, the Butchers' Bridge. Its name comes simply from the fact that the market's meat stalls were once nearby. This modern bridge has become a much-loved romantic place.

The bestiary of Jakov Brdar

Inaugurated in 2010, the bridge is adorned with bronze sculptures by the artist Jakov Brdar. There you come across Adam and Eve, Prometheus, a satyr, as well as a whole fantastic bestiary hidden along the railings. It has also become the lovers' bridge: couples attach padlocks there, as in Paris or Rome, symbolically sealing their union above the river.

What there is to see

The bridge is worth the detour for its expressive and sometimes disturbing sculptures, which invite you to seek out every detail along the railings. An amusing detail, part of its floor is glazed, letting you see the river underfoot. Between contemporary art, romanticism and the view of the Ljubljanica, it is an original stop in the heart of the old town.
