Nine centuries of history

In the eleventh century, it was only a simple medieval fortress, occupied by soldiers tasked with watching the valley and the trade routes, at a strategic location between the Alps and the Adriatic. In the fourteenth century, the region came under the control of the Habsburgs, the powerful Austrian dynasty, and the castle was gradually enlarged and rebuilt. Over the centuries, it served in turn as a residence, a barracks and even a prison, before becoming the emblematic monument of today.

The castle today houses exhibitions, historic rooms and a watchtower from which you take in a 360-degree panorama over Ljubljana, the valley and the Alps.
