Ljubljana Opera House

You’re standing before the Ljubljana Opera House, also known as the Slovenian National Theatre of Opera and Ballet. With its white facade, graceful columns, and allegorical statues, it’s one of the most elegant landmarks in the city. Built at the end of the 19th century by Czech architects in a Neo-Renaissance style, it was originally called the Provincial Theatre. In those days, performances alternated between Slovene and German, until 1911 when a separate German theatre opened nearby. From then on, this became the country’s main stage for opera and ballet. And if you’d like to extend your visit, just next door you’ll find the National Gallery, home to Slovenia’s finest works of art, and the Museum of Modern Art, dedicated to the 20th century. A little further behind lies Tivoli Park, the city’s great green space, dotted with sculptures and open-air exhibitions. Make sure you come back to wander its paths before you leave Ljubljana.
