From the provincial theatre to the national stage

Built at the end of the nineteenth century by Czech architects, in a neo-Renaissance style, the building was first called the provincial theatre. Plays were given there in Slovenian as in German, until the opening, in 1911, of a separate German theatre. Since then, it has become the great national stage of opera and ballet, and one of the high places of Slovenian cultural life.

The neo-Renaissance façade, white and richly adorned with columns and allegorical figures, is a fine example of late nineteenth-century architecture. The Opera offers throughout the year a programme of operas and ballets on its great stage. To discover its refined interior, the best is to attend a performance.

The Ljubljana Opera is in the centre of the city, near Tivoli park. The hall welcomes the public according to its programme; access to performances follows its own conditions and times. The façade can be contemplated freely from the street.
