The Nebotičnik, the skyscraper of Ljubljana

The Ljubljana audio-guided tour takes you to the foot of the Nebotičnik, literally the skyscraper. Inaugurated in 1933, it was at the time the tallest building in Yugoslavia and one of the tallest in Europe, a symbol of modernity in the heart of the Slovenian capital.

A building designed against earthquakes

The Nebotičnik rose from the ground at about the same time as the Empire State Building in New York. Its construction, designed to resist earthquakes, drew on Japanese know-how, long accustomed to living with tremors. This technical feat made it a building at the cutting edge of its time, a witness to Ljubljana's architectural ambition between the wars.

What there is to see

If the building is worth a look for its architecture, it is above all for the view that people go there. On the top floor, reached by a lift, a magnificent panoramic café-terrace offers one of the finest viewpoints over Ljubljana, its roofs, its river and its perched castle. It is the ideal place to gain height and admire the capital, notably at sunset.

The Nebotičnik is in the centre of Ljubljana. The panoramic café-terrace on the top floor is reached by lift and welcomes the public according to its own service hours. The view from the top is one of the most appreciated in the city.
