The Street of Bronze Faces

Beneath your feet stretches an extraordinary work of art: a ribbon of bronze set into the pavement, alive with hundreds of human faces. Some are smiling, others grimacing, and a few seem to be silently screaming. This eerie procession was created by the Slovenian sculptor Jakov Brdar, inspired by a text from Rainer Maria Rilke about the many faces each person carries within. Keep walking and you’ll notice the scene doesn’t end there. A little further along, a hand bursts from the ground, as if trying to pull itself free. Nearby, a metal cage reveals a human skeleton—both a reminder of fragility and a whisper of memory. And at the far end of the street, the path leads to a fountain, the final crescendo of this remarkable composition. Here, every step draws you deeper into a surreal world where the everyday life of the street blends seamlessly with the artist’s haunting imagination.
