The Constitutional Court of Korea
The Seoul audio-guided tour points out to you, on your right, the imposing building of the Constitutional Court of Korea. This high court, guardian of the Constitution, occupies a central place in the democratic life of the country.
Born of the democratic movement
The Constitutional Court was established in 1988, within the framework of the Sixth Republic of South Korea, following the movement of the Korean people demanding more democracy. Inspired by the European model, it is responsible for verifying the conformity of laws with the Constitution and for enforcing respect for fundamental rights and public freedoms, with the power to oppose the executive to avoid instability.
What there is to see
The Court is composed of nine judges: three appointed by the President of the Republic, three by the President of the Supreme Court and three elected by the National Assembly, for a renewable six-year term. During their office, the judges may not join a party or hold another public office. In addition to reviewing laws, the Court has the power to dissolve political parties and to judge impeachment procedures. The imposing building can be contemplated from the street.

The Constitutional Court of Korea has its seat in Seoul, in the historic district of the capital. An active institution, it cannot be freely visited; the building can be contemplated from the public space, along the walk.
