Gwanghwamun Square

You’re standing on one of the city’s main squares, which leads straight to Gyeongbokgung Palace and offers an impressive view of Bukhansan Mountain, regarded as the city’s guardian peak. Inaugurated in 2009, its name refers to Gwanghwamun Gate, the main entrance to the former royal palace. The square sits on what was once the main street of Seoul back in the 14th century, when King Taejo rose to power in Korea.

Today, it’s a lively gathering place for residents, a spot for strolling, meeting friends, and even hosting public demonstrations, making it very much the beating heart of the city. At one end stands a towering statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, a national hero who, in the 16th century, repeatedly defended Korea from Japanese invasions and invented the legendary “turtle ship,” an armored warship that gave the Koreans the upper hand against enemy fleets. Just in front of the statue, you’ll see a sculpture of this iconic vessel.

No wonder he’s earned a place of honor here on one of Seoul’s most famous squares!
