Jogyesa Temple

Often considered the most beautiful temple in Seoul, Jogyesa stands here on your right. The first temple built on this site dates back to the 14th century, but it’s not the one you see today. The original was completely destroyed by fire, and the current Jogyesa Temple was built in 1910, originally known as Tegosa. At the time, it became the main temple of Buddhism during the Japanese occupation of the city. It wasn’t until 1954, after the Korean War, that the temple regained its traditional appearance and took the name Jogyesa. Throughout its history, however, it has always been at the heart of Korean Buddhism. Nestled right in the middle of Seoul’s business district, it draws locals who come to pray or chant, as well as visitors who are often captivated by its beauty. Surrounding the temple are trees, some more than 400 years old, which are decorated for various occasions and Buddhist festivals.
