From a palace room to a dedicated building

Originally opened in 1969 in a small exhibition room of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the museum was moved several times before joining, in 1986, a building designed especially to house the works. Its ambition is to enhance Korean art and to raise public awareness of art and culture. The architecture, by Kim Tai-soo, draws inspiration from the form of ancient traditional Korean fortresses.

The museum exhibits works of modern and contemporary art, combining the conservation of heritage with current creation. Some of the greatest Korean artists are presented there, alongside international works that make its reputation. With several million visitors each year, it is a fascinating stop for art lovers, in an original architectural setting.
