The Alcázar of Toledo
The Toledo audio-guided tour presents you with the Alcázar, an immense fortress framed by four towers that dominates the city from its highest point.
A palace through the civilisations
The word alcázar designates a fortified Arab palace, like that of Seville. Long before being an Arab fortress, the site is said to have housed, in the third century, the Roman administration of the city, then, in the sixth century, a residence of the Visigothic kings. Under Arab domination, the Alcázar was transformed by the emirs of Cordoba. In 1085, at the capture of the city by Alphonse VI, the fortress was remodelled to the taste of the Christians; the kings Alphonse VI, VII, VIII and X used it as a military stronghold. In the sixteenth century, Charles V decided to make it a sumptuous royal dwelling. The building thus sums up, on its own, the civilisations that succeeded one another in Toledo.
What there is to see
The Alcázar imposes its massive silhouette and its four towers at the top of Toledo, offering remarkable views over the city and the valley of the Tagus. A witness of the history of the city, from the Romans to Charles V, it today houses a great museum. It is one of the most emblematic monuments of Toledo, a landmark visible from the whole city.
Practical information
The Alcázar stands at the highest point of the old town of Toledo. It houses a museum, which can be visited according to hours to be checked on site; access to the collections is generally subject to a charge.
