A genius born by the Mediterranean

Antoni Gaudi was born on 25 June 1852, into a family of coppersmiths whose ancestors had emigrated from the south of France to Catalonia two centuries earlier. It is not known whether he was born in Reus or Riudoms, two neighbouring towns south of Barcelona, but he remained deeply attached to his native Mediterranean land, whose light, colours and natural forms lastingly influenced his architecture.

What to remember

A major figure of Catalan modernism, Gaudi revolutionised architecture by drawing on the forms of nature, multiplying curves and turning ceramics and wrought iron into materials of expression. From Casa Vicens to the Sagrada Familia, by way of Park Güell, Casa Batllo and Casa Mila, his work, largely UNESCO-listed, makes Barcelona a world capital of architecture.
