Calle Real

You’re now walking along Calle Real, one of Úbeda’s liveliest and most iconic streets. Its layout dates back to the Muslim period, and it already ran through the medieval town from south to north. Even today, it acts as the backbone of the historic centre, linking the Puerta de Toledo to the great Renaissance square of Vázquez de Molina. As you walk, you’ll notice that almost every building is made from Úbeda’s golden stone, a warm honey-coloured sandstone that gives the street its glowing, uniform look, especially beautiful in the morning or evening light. Behind these façades lie many former Renaissance palaces built in the sixteenth century, when the city was living through its golden age. But Calle Real is also Úbeda’s busiest shopping street. As you continue, you’ll come across carved doorways, Renaissance balconies and the shifting perspectives typical of old winding streets.
