Carrer d'Arago
The Barcelona audio-guided tour takes you along Carrer d'Arago, one of the main arteries of the great Eixample urban plan, designed in 1863. Wide and straight, this street crosses the city from east to west and bears the name of the Crown of Aragon.
The Crown of Aragon
The first name proposed for this street was simply Street L, before that of the Crown of Aragon was chosen. This crown was the union of two independent territories, the county of Aragon and that of Barcelona. Over time, it incorporated the kingdoms of Valencia, Majorca, Sicily, Sardinia and Naples, forming a great Mediterranean power, at the origin of modern Catalonia and Spain.
What there is to see
Carrer d'Arago illustrates the ambition of the Cerda plan, which gave Barcelona a regular grid of wide avenues. Along the street follow modernist buildings and facades characteristic of the Eixample. It crosses the main axes of the district, such as Passeig de Gracia, and links several masterpieces of Catalan architecture.
