Casa Comalat

The Barcelona audio-guided tour reveals Casa Comalat, one of the most beautiful modernist houses in the city. Less known than Gaudi's works, it nonetheless shows great inventiveness, in an open tribute to the master of modernism.

A tribute to Gaudi

The house was built between 1906 and 1911 by the architect Salvador Valeri i Pupurull, at the request of Lord Comalat. Valeri does not hide the influence of Gaudi and takes up many elements of the master's architecture. Casa Comalat has the peculiarity of presenting two distinct facades: a main facade on Avinguda Diagonal, of stone and symmetrical, and a rear facade all curves and colours, more whimsical.

What there is to see

The rear facade, visible from the street, unfolds its colourful curves and ceramics, recalling Gaudi's Casa Batllo, while the main facade, more sober, relies on stone and sculpted details. This double face makes Casa Comalat a curiosity of its own, which pleasantly extends the discovery of Catalan modernism.

Practical information

Casa Comalat is at 42 Avinguda Diagonal, with its rear facade on a neighbouring street, in the Eixample district. The two facades can be seen freely from the street. As the building is private, interior access is generally limited; it is best to check on any possible visits.
