Casa Vicens
The Barcelona audio-guided tour leads you to Casa Vicens, in the Gracia district. The first major work of Antoni Gaudi, this house marks the beginnings of an architectural genius, then barely thirty years old.
Gaudi's first work
Built between 1883 and 1889, at a time when Gracia was still a town in its own right, Casa Vicens was Gaudi's first commission. The building reflects his personal interpretation of Islamic and Oriental art, in a blend of Mudejar and Spanish styles. It is part of the historicism then in vogue in Europe, the movement that drew on past styles to bring them up to date.
What there is to see
The facade, covered with ceramic tiles in plant and geometric patterns, bursts with colour and already announces the daring of the future Gaudi. Inside, the ceilings, woodwork and Orientalist decoration form a refined world. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Casa Vicens, long private, is now open to visitors.
