A Mudéjar jewel and a masterpiece by El Greco

Mudéjar art, often found in Toledo, was born of the know-how of the Muslim craftsmen who remained in Spain become Catholic, who integrated their techniques into Jewish and Christian buildings. The bell tower of Santo Tomé is a superb testimony of it. The church was built in the twelfth century, then entirely rebuilt in the fourteenth century by the lord of Orgaz. It today owes its fame to the painting by El Greco that it preserves, "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz": according to tradition, the work was commissioned by the priest of the church following the miracle that occurred during the funeral of this nobleman of Toledo.
