Church of Santo Tomé

Look up at the tall bell tower rising before you—it's one of the finest examples of Mudéjar art in Toledo. If you're unfamiliar with the term Mudéjar, get ready to hear a lot of it during your visit! It’s a style you’d find only in this country, imagined by Muslim artists who remained in Catholic Spain and continued to apply their techniques and aesthetics to Christian and Jewish buildings. These artisans were called the Mudéjars. This blend of cultures and traditions has gifted Spain with countless masterpieces, such as the Alcázar of Seville. As for the beautiful tower in front of you, it belongs to the Church of Santo Tomé. The entrance is just around the corner—follow the route and you'll soon find yourself in front. Originally built in the 12th century, the church was later reconstructed in the 14th century by the Lord of Orgaz. If the church is so famous today, it’s probably thanks to the painting inside: The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, by El Greco. According to legend, this masterpiece was commissioned after a miraculous event at a nobleman's funeral here in Toledo. The story tells that two saints descended from heaven to carry his soul to the afterlife, inspiring the parish priest to order this remarkable work.
