To truly feel the soul of Valencia’s Old Town, there’s nothing like a walk through El Carmen. This iconic neighbourhood is the beating heart of the city’s historic centre. Its cobbled streets were enclosed by Muslim walls centuries ago, but today, they’re home to countless hidden treasures, with history right at your fingertips. El Carmen may be old, but it’s anything but stuck in the past. As you explore, you’ll find lively bars, cozy cafés, quirky shops, and vibrant street art that bring a modern energy to the neighbourhood. This is the kind of place that shows up on postcards—the perfect picture of Valencia’s charm. Naturally, we were curious about its origins, and here’s what we found: by the 11th century, the Arab defensive wall that once enclosed the city was nearly complete. Over time, a small agricultural area began to take shape, and before long, houses sprang up on that very spot. El Carmen developed right next to the old city wall, so this is where you’ll find the greatest number of surviving fragments of the ancient fortifications. Take a look around—many parts of the district are open to the public, and the contrast between historic ruins and modern life makes the district feel like an open-air museum. You can spot one of the towers near Plaza del Ángel and Plaza de los Navarros.
