Festivals in San Sebastian

You might already know San Sebastian for one of its biggest yearly events, the International Film Festival, held every September. It’s a world-famous competition that celebrates top talent from around the globe, with major awards for directors, actors, and Best Film of the Year. But San Sebastian, or Donostia as it’s called in Basque, also hosts one of Spain’s most famous jazz festivals, the Jazzaldia, every July. Founded in 1966, it’s one of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe. Over the years, it’s welcomed legends like Miles Davis, Ray Charles, and B.B. King to its stages across the city. Then comes Semana Grande in August, the “Big Week”, when the whole city comes alive. It’s packed with events such as horse races, beach volleyball, exhibitions, parades, and the star attraction, the International Fireworks Competition. Pyrotechnic teams from around the world compete to win the Golden Shell, or Concha de Oro. It’s a week full of energy, music, and celebration, and a favourite among locals. Now you know some of San Sebastian’s most iconic festivals, just a few more reasons to come back and experience this beautiful seaside city at its most festive!
