Gardens of La Merced

The Gardens of La Merced were created in 1905 on the site of the city’s former bullring. Their circular layout is reminiscent of the old arena’s shape. They’re also known as the Columbus Gardens, referring to a nearby convent where Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed before embarking on his great voyage. At the centre of the gardens stands a grand neo-Romanesque fountain from the late 19th century, designed by sculptor Rafael de Rosal. This small green haven in the heart of Cordoba’s city centre is a lovely spot for a stroll, just a stone’s throw from the Palace of La Merced.
