Lope de Vega Theatre

Welcome to the elegant Lope de Vega Theatre. Originally built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, it was first known as the Exposition Theatre. To prepare for this international event, the city underwent a major redevelopment. The famous Plaza de España was constructed for the occasion, along with a grand luxury hotel—the Hotel Alfonso XIII—designed to host the most prestigious guests. For these high-profile visitors, a new complex was developed, complete with a casino and the beautiful Italian-style theatre in front of you, featuring decorative Baroque architecture. In 1936, the Exposition Theatre was renamed in honour of Lope de Vega, one of Spain’s greatest playwrights. After a full renovation in the 1980s, it became one of the country’s leading venues and now stages more than 180 performances a year. The Lope de Vega Theatre remains one of Seville’s most iconic cultural landmarks.
