Palace of the Marquises of Lovers’ Rock

The stunning Renaissance façade overlooking the square belongs to the Palace of the Marquises of Peña de los Enamorados. Built in the late 16th century, it blends intricate Mudéjar craftsmanship with the elegance of Renaissance design. It’s considered one of the most important historic landmarks in Antequera. The Rojas family, whose ancestors fought alongside Don Fernando during the conquest of the city, lived here for generations. Up until the 19th century, they were a well-connected and influential house in the region. It was here that the entire royal family was hosted during Queen Isabella II’s visit to Antequera in 1862! That gives you an idea of their status. From the outside, the palace resembles a traditional Castilian urban fortress, with turrets you can still spot on the corners. But the building you see today mostly reflects the changes made in the 20th century, when it was converted into a Carmelite Fathers’ college. Very little of the original layout remains inside, as most of it was lost in a fire during the civil war. If you’re curious, feel free to step inside, entry is free!
