A dreamed garden city

The park owes its name to Eusebi Güell, patron and great admirer of Gaudi, who commissioned an elegant, airy garden city for the city's aristocracy. The project, inspired by English garden cities, was to include a chapel and sixty houses, but only a few were built. One says Park, in the English manner, and not parque, to underline this British inspiration of a landscaped garden.

What there is to see

From the entrance, the pavilions topped with undulating roofs covered in ceramics announce the dreamlike world of the park. Beyond open the Dragon staircase, the hypostyle hall, the undulating bench and the viewpoints over Barcelona. Since 2013, to protect the site from crowds, access to the monumental zone is regulated, limited and subject to an entrance fee.

Park Güell is on the Carmel hill, in the Gracia district, north of Barcelona. Access to the monumental zone is ticketed, limited and subject to hours that vary by season; as the site is very busy, it is best to plan well in advance. Other parts of the park remain freely accessible.
