Roman Bridge

You’re now walking in the footsteps of Roman history, along the path where the first bridge was built to connect the two banks of the Guadalquivir River. Constructed in 45 BC, it remained Córdoba’s only bridge up until the early 20th century, making it a vital gateway into the city. It was also part of the Via Augusta, one of the longest Roman roads in the Iberian Peninsula. That’s why this bridge is flanked by two of Córdoba’s most iconic landmarks, the Calahorra Tower on one end, and the Puerta del Puente on the other. Together, they defended the city and controlled access to it. The bridge was rebuilt in the 10th century by the Moors, who ruled the city at the time. It was later restored several times after the Catholic monarchs conquered the city, gradually evolving into the structure we see today. Of its 16 arches, only two are original, the others have been rebuilt over time. This historic bridge has even made appearances on the big screen, featured in several films and series, including the famous Game of Thrones. But beyond its cinematic fame, the Roman Bridge of Córdoba carries real historical significance. It was the first structure to allow passage through the Guadalquivir without a boat, and it was the city’s only entry point for more than twenty centuries. Some of the greatest battles in Córdoba’s history were fought here, on this very bridge.
