The Toledo audio-guided tour presents you, on the Plaza del Cardenal Siliceo, with the Royal College of Noble Maidens, an educational institution recently opened to the public.

A centuries-old educational institution

Founded in 1552 by Cardinal Siliceo, the college aimed to welcome and educate young girls from modest families; when King Philip accepted the co-patronage of the school, daughters of the nobility were also received there. The building was renovated in the eighteenth century: its façade bears a fine Baroque door leading to the church of the school, and an elevated passage connected the college to the neighbouring houses acquired during its extension. The institution operated according to its original statute until 1988, becoming one of the best establishments in Europe, before being redeveloped in 1990 and, recently, opened to visits.
