San Ignacio de Loyola Church

Welcome to San Ignacio de Loyola Church! Located at the heart of the Gros district, this church was inaugurated in 1897, at a time when this part of San Sebastian was growing and welcoming more residents. Its tower, however, wasn’t completed until 1928. The church showcases a beautiful neo-Gothic style that was very popular at the time, designed by Basque architect José Goicoa Barcaiztegui. It’s well worth stepping inside to admire its interior. You'll find a striking collection of paintings depicting scenes from Saint Ignatius’s life, displayed in the church chancel. These artworks are impressive in both size and colour, bringing warmth and energy to the space. You’ll also come across the neo-Renaissance tomb of the Duke of Mandas, a 19th-century aristocrat whose donation made it possible to finish building the tower. This is a beautiful church that’s rich in history, and definitely worth a visit!
