The Church of San Ildefonso

The Toledo audio-guided tour presents you with the Baroque Jesuit Church of San Ildefonso, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, whose towers dominate the historic centre.

A witness of Jesuit Baroque art

In the niche between its two towers sits the statue of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order, fervent defenders of the Counter-Reformation. It is at this time that the Catholic Church massively adopted Baroque art, intended, in opposition to the sobriety advocated by the Protestants, to impress the crowds and to celebrate the glory of God. The exterior of the church is in brick, like the first churches of Toledo, while the interior, covered with white stucco, brings out the colours of the apse and the chapels. Dedicated to Saint Ildefonso, archbishop of Toledo in the seventh century and patron of the city, the church took nearly a century to build; two years after its completion, King Charles III ordered the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain.

What there is to see

The Church of San Ildefonso invites contemplation in its white-stucco Baroque interior, which exalts the colours of the apse and the chapels. The climb to its towers offers one of the finest panoramas over Toledo. A witness of Jesuit art and the Counter-Reformation, it combines spirituality, architectural beauty and an exceptional view over the city.
