Four centuries of construction

Its construction was ordered by the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, after the conquest of the territory in 1478. Work began in 1500 and it took more than four centuries to complete this monumental cathedral, which explains the mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Until 1819, Santa Ana was the only cathedral in the Canary Islands. It is today listed as a Property of Cultural Interest.

What there is to see

The grey facade of the cathedral, with its fine rose window, is striking from Plaza Santa Ana, in the heart of the Vegueta district. Inside, the nave, the chapels and the liturgical furnishings invite contemplation. An access also allows you to climb the tower to enjoy a view over the old town. The visit is made with respect for the place of worship.

Santa Ana Cathedral is on the square of the same name, in the Vegueta district, in the historic centre of Las Palmas. The tourist visit is generally ticketed and subject to hours that vary by day and season; it is best to check in advance. An active place of worship, it requires proper dress and silence.
