The Barrio Gótico, historic heart of Barcelona

The Barcelona audio-guided tour has you take Carrer dels Banys Nous, which once ran along the outside of the Roman wall. This typical street introduces the Barrio Gótico, the Gothic quarter, a true star of the city and cradle of ancient Barcelona.

From medieval baths to the Roman colony

The street takes its name, which can be translated as "New Baths", from former public baths founded in 1160 at this spot where water was abundant. The building, constructed on the model of Arab baths but with Romanesque techniques, was kept until its demolition in 1835. The district rises where Emperor Augustus founded the Roman colony of Barcino: despite its name, the Barrio Gótico in fact blends Roman vestiges and medieval architecture.

What there is to see

The district is a maze of narrow alleys where intimate squares, medieval palaces and ancient remains hide. In a shop on Carrer dels Banys Nous, you can even glimpse the very well-preserved remains of a twelfth-century bathroom. Between the cathedral, Plaça del Rei and the Roman gates, the Barrio Gótico lends itself to strolling and to discoveries at every street corner.
