The nature theatre

The Barcelona audio-guided tour brings you, in the heart of Park Güell, to the great square that Gaudi had first imagined as an open-air Greek theatre. Renamed the Nature Square, it is one of the most famous and photographed spaces in the park.

A square inspired by ancient agoras

The initial project had named this place the Greek theatre, in anticipation of the great open-air performances that were to be held there. Gaudi had drawn on the agoras of ancient Greece, where the social, political and economic heart of the city gathered. Eighty-six metres long and forty-three wide, this great square is partly artificial: carved into the rock on one side, it rests on the hypostyle hall on the other.

What there is to see

Set against the mountain and lined with palm trees, the square gives the impression of an amphitheatre open onto Barcelona. It is ringed by the famous undulating bench, one of the longest in the world, covered in brightly coloured trencadis, where visitors sit facing the panorama. From this terrace opens one of the finest views over the city and the Mediterranean.

Practical information

The Nature Square is in the monumental zone of Park Güell, in Barcelona. Access to this zone is ticketed and limited, with hours that vary by season; as the place is very busy, it is best to plan ahead and come early to enjoy the bench and the view more calmly.
