The Torres de Serranos are one of the two monumental gates that survive from the old walls of Valencia, and one of the symbols of the town. This imposing fortified gate was built at the end of the fourteenth century, in a magnificent Gothic style, and is among the largest Gothic gates of Europe. It is composed of two powerful polygonal towers framing an arch, whose façade on the town side remains open, revealing the staircases and the inner galleries. The gate served at once for the defence of the town and as a gate of ceremony for the great ceremonies, the royal entries and the processions. Later, it also served as a prison for nobles. Today, you can climb the towers to enjoy a fine view over the old town, the bed of the Turia river transformed into gardens, and the roofs of Valencia. Each year, it is here that the Fallas festival opens. An emblematic monument and a witness of medieval Valencia, the Torres de Serranos are a must-see stop.
