Town Hall

You’re now in front of Antequera’s Town Hall. It might not look like much at first glance—but that’s exactly why we’ve stopped. It’s a reminder to stay curious and take a peek at what’s hidden behind these walls. Before the period of Spanish confiscation—when much church property was seized and sold off, often ending up in the hands of the state—this building was a Franciscan convent, along with the church next to it. The façade has been altered over time, but many of the convent’s original spaces are still intact. Step inside to find a stunning cloistered courtyard and a beautiful grand staircase. The Town Hall also includes a space that regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, so you may find something that catches your interest. Just a little further along on your left, you’ll see the Church of Saint John of God. There’s a small entry fee, but it’s worth paying if you’re a fan of intricate plasterwork. The dome inside is covered in decorative motifs and considered a true gem of Andalusian Baroque art.
