Tribute to the Carpet Maker

As you enter the square, take a moment to notice the statue of a man kneeling, focused on his work. This is the Tribute to the Carpet Maker, a monument dedicated to one of La Orotava’s most cherished traditions. The carpets of La Orotava are a local tradition. They’re made from sand from Mount Teide and fresh flowers, and are renowned for their beauty. Their creation is reminiscent of Hindu mandalas. During the religious celebration of Corpus Christi, held every year between late May and June, several of these carpets are crafted in the streets surrounding the town hall square. The highlight is the gigantic central carpet, laid out across the entire plaza in front of the Ayuntamiento. This monument pays homage to the artisans who bring this ephemeral art form to life.
