The Vegueta district
The Las Palmas audio-guided tour reveals the Vegueta district, the oldest in the city along with Triana. The cradle of the Canarian capital, it gathers many 15th-century monuments and is explored along picturesque lanes with romantic charm.
The founding nucleus of Las Palmas
It was in Vegueta that Las Palmas was born, at the end of the 15th century, when the Catholic Monarchs conquered and settled on Gran Canaria. Characterised by colonial architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries, the district was once surrounded by fortified walls that protected it from attacks. This protection helped preserve a remarkably well-kept old centre, which retains all its authenticity.
What there is to see
Vegueta concentrates the great monuments of Las Palmas: the cathedral of Santa Ana, Plaza Santa Ana and its cast-iron dogs, the house of Christopher Columbus, the Canarian Museum and fine colonial mansions. Its cobbled lanes, shaded by palms, invite strolling. It is the historic heart of the city, to be explored at leisure.
Practical information
The Vegueta district is freely walkable on foot, south of the centre of Las Palmas. Its streets are accessible at any time; the monuments, museums and shops follow their own hours. It is the ideal starting point to discover the historic centre and reach the neighbouring Triana district.
