The longest river of the peninsula

The Tagus is the longest river of the Iberian peninsula. It has its source in Spain and crosses Portugal before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at Lisbon. Legend has it that Heracles, son of Zeus, traced with his sword the bed of the Tagus around Toledo. Beyond the myth, the river is closely linked to the history of the city: by surrounding it almost entirely, it offered it its first natural defence and shaped its exceptional situation, perched on its rock. It is this loop of the Tagus that gives Toledo its so characteristic silhouette.
