The Swedish Parliament
The Stockholm audio-guided tour leads you before the Swedish Parliament, the Riksdag, the democratic heart of the country. Occupying almost on its own the islet of Helgeandsholmen, between the old town and the centre, it is one of the major institutions of the capital.
The Riksdag
Several projects considered transforming the islet into a park, but it was finally the seat of Parliament and that of the central bank that settled there from 1905. In the 1980s, the bank's move allowed the parliamentary institution to expand, by recovering the western plot. The Riksdag is the unicameral parliament of the kingdom of Sweden.
What there is to see
The parliamentary complex combines an old part, in a neoclassical and Baroque style, and a more recent part. The galleries of the chamber are open to the public when the House is sitting, and guided tours allow you to discover the interior. The building, by the water, also offers fine views over Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace.
