The Grand Théâtre
The Geneva audio-guided tour presents you with the Grand Théâtre, the main performance hall of the city and one of the most important opera stages in Europe.
The opera of Geneva on the Place de Neuve
Inaugurated in 1879, the Grand Théâtre is the largest structure of this type in French-speaking Switzerland, the francophone part of the country. Its Second Empire style façade, inspired by the Opera Garnier in Paris, presents at the doors of the theatre the allegories of tragedy, comedy, dance and music. Renowned for its lyrical and choreographic performances, its recitals and its concerts, it enjoys international fame. It stands on the Place de Neuve, one of the most important of the city, surrounded by historic buildings: the Musee Rath on one side, the Conservatory of music on the other. The name of the square recalls the former Neuve gate, pierced in the fortifications; on their demolition in the mid-nineteenth century, an esplanade was laid out, adorned with the equestrian statue of General Dufour, a Swiss national hero.
