The Basel audio-guided tour has you discover the House of Rock Mural, a large colourful fresco that transforms a wall of the old town into a veritable open-air gallery.

A wall of music legends

Observing the faces, one recognises several legends of music: David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and many others, gathered as on a wall of celebrities of rock and pop. The work was made in 2008 by the Basel artists' collective Art4000, at the request of the bar L'Unique House of Rock located just opposite. Since then, the fresco continues to evolve, new portraits being added over the years.

What there is to see

The fresco unfolds its colourful portraits in the heart of a small old alley, bringing a modern and spontaneous touch to the historic setting. One amuses oneself recognising the artists, knowing that each visit may hold a surprise, with a recently appeared face. It is a testimony that Basel is also a city turned towards contemporary creation.
