Old Arsenal

You’re now standing in front of Geneva’s Old Arsenal, a building with roots dating back to the 15th century. Originally, this site served as a covered market—a tradition going all the way back to Roman times. In the 16th century, the structure was repurposed as a granary, and that’s when the arcades you see today were added. Then, in the 18th century, it took on a military role, becoming a weapons depot to help defend Geneva’s strategic position. It remained in use for that purpose until 1877, when it was converted into the State Archives, which are still located here. Beneath the arcades, you’ll find five historical cannons—similar to those that once protected the city from its ramparts. Just behind them are colorful frescoes by Alexandre Cingria, illustrating scenes from Geneva’s past. This spot is a true symbol of the city’s rich history and is also home to the Artillery Museum, which features ancient cannons and military-themed mosaics.
