Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church

This is the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, the first Catholic church built in Berne and the episcopal seat of the Catholic-Christian Church of Switzerland. It was constructed at the end of the 19th century after an international architectural competition. The winning design came from France, by the architect who also designed Paris City Hall, and embraced a historicist style. This was a popular trend at the time, which revived and blended elements from past architectural eras. As a result, the church combines features reminiscent of Romanesque and early Gothic design. Inside, the ceiling paintings and stained glass windows reflect the Art Nouveau movement, while the choir area was completely redesigned in 1998. The building is listed as a Swiss cultural asset of national importance and has undergone several renovations over the years, to preserve its unique charm and historical significance.
