Schipfe district

You’re now on the left side of the Limmat, right in the middle of Schipfe, Zurich’s oldest neighbourhood. Some historians even say that this place was part of Turicum’s port, a Roman city. Look around you and try to imagine yourself here during medieval times, when boats would moor along the quay while merchants unloaded crates of silk, food and gold. “Schipfe” comes from “schupfe”, which means to push boats out of the water. When Switzerland industrialised in the 16th century, shipyards and silk factories were introduced to the district. Today, Schipfe is known for its craftsmanship, romantic streets and bohemian vibe. It’s the perfect spot to aimlessly stroll around, as well as buy a little handmade souvenir—in the tradition and expertise of the region.
