St. Peter's Chapel

You’ve now arrived at Rosengart Square, behind St. Peter’s Chapel. This is the oldest Catholic church in Lucerne, which gave its name to the bridge you just crossed. It’s difficult to pinpoint when the chapel was built, but we do know that in the 13th century, a council was formed to organise city affairs, and it appointed St. Peter’s Chapel’s priest as the mayor of Lucerne. That means the chapel dates back at least to the 13th century. As you step off the bridge, look to your left: the riverfront is lined with lively bars and restaurants. Under the arcades of the town hall, you’ll find a beautiful open-air market held every Tuesday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s considered one of the most picturesque markets in Switzerland—so if you're here on the right day, don’t miss it. The market also extends onto Jesuitenplatz and Bahnhofstrasse. For now, let’s continue along the waterfront in the other direction, making our way closer to the lake.
