The Aare

This peaceful, shaded path runs along the Aare all the way to the large metal Kirchenfeld Bridge. The Aare is Switzerland’s main river. It begins high in the Bernese Alps and eventually flows into the Rhine at Koblenz. You might have already gone swimming in it, or spotted people drifting along its crystal-clear waters. Even though the Aare runs right through the middle of the city, the water remains remarkably clean. Since motorboats are not allowed, nature takes center stage. The river brings a relaxed, almost coastal vibe to Berne. You’ll often see surfers in wetsuits walking through town with boards under their arms. The Aare is at the heart of life here, and once you’ve seen it for yourself, it’s easy to understand why it’s such a beloved part of the city’s charm.
