This landmark opened in the early 1900s and was recently renovated with the goal of creating a vibrant social hub, bringing together Berne’s cultural event, and culinary scenes under one roof. You can attend concerts, performances, and enjoy the diverse gastronomic offerings. The Casino is owned by the Bourgeoisie of Berne, but this isn’t the bourgeoisie you’re thinking of... In Switzerland, the Bourgeoisie is a public institution that serves the population and works to promote both the city and canton of Berne, balancing tradition with modern needs. Back in the old Republic of Berne, which ceased to exist in 1798, only full-rights citizens, those born in the commune, were considered part of the “bourgeoisie.” Today, in some cantons like Berne, this old structure still exists as a kind of fourth layer of government, alongside the Confederation, canton, and commune. The Bourgeoisie of Berne owns significant assets, which it uses to fund civic and cultural projects. This institution financed the recent restoration of the Casino, and it signed an agreement with the State in 1909 to build and maintain a concert hall. Since its creation, the Berne Casino has been a place for community, culture, and celebration. After its renovation, under the motto “Back to the Future”, it now stands as a faithful reproduction of the 1909 original, blending historical elegance with a dynamic new life.
