The Grain Hall

The impressive building in front of you is the old Grain Hall, built in the 1710s to store grains in case of war or famine. Designed by architect Hans Jakob Dünz, it’s considered one of the masterpieces of Bernese Baroque architecture. Over the course of its 300-year history, the building has played many roles, first as a grain storage facility, then a wine cellar, later a military barracks, and eventually a covered market. Today, it’s a vibrant hub for education, culture and gastronomy. Inside, you’ll find two restaurants, a library, and the Media and Design Forum. If you head into the restaurant, don’t miss the spectacular vaulted cellar. It’s designed with church-like architecture and decorated with artistic frescoes, and many consider it the most beautiful cellar in Berne.
